Film 1/6 - Bounce - Film by Lee Hutzulak - Music from Quinsin Nachoff's Flux: Path of Totality

As part of the Feb 8th worldwide release of ‘Path of Totality’ on Whirlwind Recordings, I commissioned six cutting-edge filmmakers to create an original work in response to a miniature version of each composition.

The first film is ‘Bounce’ by Lee Hutzulak, a filmmaker, artist and musician based in Vancouver, Canada! This piece uses the physics of a bouncing object as the inspiration - thank you to Dr Stephen Morris at University of Toronto Physics for his computer programming and collaboration on this piece!

And always huge thanks to the amazing musicians: David Binney, Matt Mitchell and Nate Wood!

Turning Point Ensemble, Ethereal Trio & sophomore Flux recording in the works

Flux sophomore recording in the works
Back here in Brooklyn and busy working on new music to complete Flux’s sophomore recording to feature David Binney (alto sax), Matt Mitchell (piano, keyboards and synths) and both Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood (drummers). Recording dates set for early September - watch for an early 2018 release.

Turning Point Ensemble premiere of Winding Tessellations (saxophone concerto)

Had a great time at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in late June premiering a new saxophone concerto for the Turning Point Ensemble (chamber orchestra). It was also a pleasure to play on John Hollenbeck’s and François Houle’s compositions. Special thanks to physicist Dr Stephen Morris (University of Toronto) for his help with some source materials for the composition - cracks forming in drying mud.

A snippet from rehearsal:

Flux updates
(Flux in Montreal at Café Resonance, December 2016)

We had a great tour in November and December of 2016 and hit Systems Two Recording Studio in Brooklyn right after to track most of a new album. Watch for it with an end-of-2017 release.

A nice review came out in Jazziz in January - “...the juxtaposition of the comparatively deliberate ‘Astral Echo Poem’ and the whirling maelstrom that is the concluding ‘Tilted’ demonstrates the combo’s thrillingly wide range.”

Flux was on a several ‘best-of 2016’ lists, including:

John Taylor

I’ve been very saddened hearing of the passing of the great pianist John Taylor.

Some favourite albums are his work with Azimuth, the Peter Erskine Trio and Kenny Wheeler.

I had the pleasure of presenting a concert at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and making a recording of one of my projects with him in 2005. No matter what I had composed John always made it his own with his unique touch and time-feel. It was also an amazing learning experience playing with one of the best accompanists and a true improviser - on the pieces we had multiple solo takes it was near impossible trying to decide which one to use on the record. I also remember from the session that he was in good spirits as he had reconnected with his high school sweetheart (his future wife) and whenever there were breaks on the session he’d head outside to text with her. After the day’s recording we would end the eve off with a hang at the pub - we found a decent English pub near his hotel. A very friendly and warm soul, it was great to hear stories and his thoughts about working with Kenny and others.

Several years later we reconnected at The Sound Symposium in Newfoundland where he was playing a solo concert. Not only was the music sublime, but the hang afterwards over several pints was also as welcoming as ever.

I’m very glad I had an opportunity to work with him. I’m thinking about his music and playing, reminiscing about my session and wishing his family my condolences.

Back in NYC after a really fun couple of concerts with Dan Weiss and Mark Helias with The Penderecki String Quartet. Everyone played beautifully and the hang was great!
At the final concert at The Rex this past Sunday it was a pleasure to play for such an attentive audience (and to see so many friends and colleagues.)

Mary Whitaker

It is with shock and great sadness to learn of the sudden and tragic death of violinist Mary Whitaker. I had the great pleasure of working with her on my violin concerto demo this past January. In addition to being a great player she had such a positive, warm and encouraging attitude. My deepest condolences go out to her family and friends. August 9, 2011

Hey inter-web-space,

Just a quick note, a lot on the go.

I had a great time in Australia in June with trumpeter Peter Knight, premiering a new commissioned suite for his 5+2 Brass Ensemble, all stellar Australian players, at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It was a pleasure to be able to bring out NYC pianist Matt Mitchell for a short run of Forward Motion gigs as well. We played at the Valley Jazz Festival in Brisbane where we were then in residence for a week at the Queensland Conservatorium, in Brisbane- also quite a rewarding experience.
(Thanks to The Canada Council for the Arts and the SOCAN Foundation for making this possible.)

I was then off to France for a very nice concert with Bruno Tocanne‘s Collective New Dreams - a combination of collective’s from the south of France. A short video was shot about the concert.

Now back in muggy NYC and working on a commission for clarinetist Peter Stoll with the Cecilia string quartet.

New look for

I am very excited to present the new look for

Innumerable thanks to Yesim Tosunar at Backyard Design for her art concept and graphic design and Joe Lagan for the backend setup and programming.

Some recent & upcoming creative and fun projects:
Had a great time performing a large-scale commission of mine with the Greg Runions bigband featuring trumpet ace Tim Hagans! Concerts in Kingston, ON and Toronto, ON were well received.

Members of the band also arranged three of my newer tunes from my imminent release FoMo:
music with more of a rock slant with Russ Johnson (trumpet), Adrean Farrugia (Fender Rhodes), Mark Kelso (drums) and myself (sax).

Artwork by Mark Ollinger
Watch for this new release early this Fall!

Off to France in October to play with great French drummer Bruno Tocanne‘s larger bass-less group, with a new piece premiered for this occasion too.

Then back to work in NYC on my Violin Concert for virtuoso Montrealer Nathalie Bonin.

Another fun longterm project to watch for:
May 2011 - a commission for Australian trumpeter Peter Knight’s 5+2 Brass Ensemble with the addition of myself on sax and clarinet.

See you out there!
